Position Description

Compete is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our team full-time helping us develop one of the fastest growing web applications. Compete.com currently gets over 1M unique visitors per month and is growing in leaps and bounds. The engineer will play a critical part in expanding out the Compete.com functionality to both attract new users and provide additional value added services to our existing users. Our environment is fast-paced based around an agile product development methodology with user-centered iterative design and development cycles. Our goal is to release new features and functionality monthly to keep the site fresh and engaging to our users. Intimacy with the blogosphere, e-commerce applications and Web2.0 applications is a big plus.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with product management to define new features and functionality for the Compete web properties
  • Owning end-to-end process of feature implementation from conception to release
  • Working in a small group within a start-up environment creating full service dynamic web products
  • Working within a Linux and open-source environment
  • Creating complex standards-compliant web applications utilizing CSS, JavaScript, HTML/XHTML  


Qualifications: 


  • Fluency working in a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Python) development environment
  • Web Services (SOAP) experience a plus
  • Strong experience working with databases – both in terms of data modeling and data access
  • Strong web application design a must; Python, Perl, or PHP experience preferred
  • Development experience using Django a strong plus
  • Experiencing developing high performance web-applications used by millions of users a plus
  • HTML, XHTML, CSS and JavaScript knowledge 
  • AJAX experience a plus
  • Undergraduate degree in CS or a engineering-related field preferred 
  • Excellent analytical and programming skills
  • 6+ years experience developing commercial software 
  • Track record of shipping software on time in a fast paced environment; previous experience with SCRUM preferred
  • Passion for developing high quality software that provides value to customers
